Five Good Reasons To Wear The Right Kind Of Work Gloves by Justin Arnold
When it comes to wearing work gloves it's clearly important to make sure that your hand is properly protected. There are five very good reasons why you should always make sure that your hands safely protected by wearing the appropriate safety gloves. The first reason is your thumb, and the next four reasons are all to do with fingers.
We take our hands for granted, but we rely on them for almost everything we do every day, and even a small injury can often result in us being unable to work properly or efficiently, and a serious injury may prevent us from being able to work at all. There are a whole range of consequences from not wearing the right kind of work gloves, and yet every year there are still hundreds of hand injuries caused at work through workers either not wearing safety gloves at all, or wearing the wrong type of glove.
To many people it is surprising that there are different types of safety gloves, and when asked most people would struggle to come up with more than two or three different types of risk against which work gloves should protect the hand. But the reality is that there are at least seven different categories of risk associated with hands which need to be appropriately dealt with through the right kind of glove technology and design.
There have never been more types of work gloves on the market than there are today, which is why it's important to be aware not only of the specific type of risk or risks which a task or job might entail, but also the degree of risk. Safety gloves today don't come in a one size fits all, or even a single degree of protection. Safety gloves are available for mild risks, medium risks and severe risks, and so a full assessment is required of the task so that the appropriate kind of glove can be issued or worn. So what are these seven different categories of danger to the hand which safety gloves needs to protect against?
1. Cutting. The danger of cutting could be anything from using a craft knife to a jigsaw or even a circular saw. It is important to be aware that whenever a blade is used, either manually or as part of machine, the degree of risk should be matched by the amount of protection work gloves are able to offer.
2. Puncturing. Most commonly the risk of puncturing is when using machinery such as is found at factories. Wherever there may be a need to stamp or puncture materials there may be a danger of the hand becoming damaged. This is a specific kind of risk which will need a specific form of protection.
3. Heat/cold. The danger of burning and the danger of damage through cold, such as frostbite or frost damage is actually very similar, but there are still different types of work gloves to help protect against heat as well as those to protect against cold.
4. Abrasion. Some materials can be very abrasive, such as wood, concrete, stone or even some packaging materials. The risks here are usually to the inside of the hand rather than to the more commonly injured back of the hand, and so appropriate work gloves should be worn for this reason.
5. Vibration. When using any kind of machinery which vibrates, such as a pneumatic drill, there are severe dangers as far as joints and nerves are concerned. Work gloves which help to cushion the vibrations can help to protect against long-term damage.
6. Posture/repetitive strain. It's only really in the last few years that the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome and other repetitive strain injuries has been really understood. As more of us use computers the risk is a very severe one, and there are work gloves which help to protect key areas such as the wrist.
7. Grip/dexterity. In some cases work gloves are needed simply to provide a little extra grip, particularly when working with small, delicate objects. The danger here is not so much to the hands, as to the items being used by the hand. It could be that grease or sweat from a hand could represent a danger to items such as electronic equipment, or it may be that a little extra grip is required to increase productivity and accuracy.
