Wood Routers : Using a Pattern-Cutting Router Bit
FYI on Woodworking Router Bit
BUYING A CNC ROUTER
CNC routers are becoming increasingly popular for both home and commercial use as word spreads about their flexibility, versatility and commercial viability. These machines are able to cut, drill and carve three-dimensional shapes with precision accuracy, consistency and speed and can be used on a variety of materials including metal, wood and plastic – making them ideal for use in a range of industries including cabinet-making, furniture and signwriting.
When it comes to purchasing a cnc router however, it’s not that simple. There are many hundreds of cnc routers on the market, different sized machines, different software options, different upgrading options, new and used cnc routers – plus there are build-it-yourself models, so the choice is vast and can be bewildering.
Starting off with a good look at the web, and especially the blogs and chat forums for the cnc router fraternity is a good way of getting going. These are a good way of getting opinions and reviews from a diversity of users. Also look at websites covering buyers’ guides to cnc routers and the websites of industry specialists for product reviews and news.
You can either purchase a new cnc router directly from the manufacturer or from a third party distributor, and you can also buy used machines from many suppliers as well as sourcing your own from online sites such as e-bay.
To prevent setting off on a wild goose-chase, it’s best to have some insights of your own beforehand – and these questions may help
· What are my primary objectives for getting a CNC router?
· How big do I want the machine to be – and do I have any limitations on space?
· What features must the router have? (current and projected)
· What’s my budget?
· Do I want to buy outright, buy a used cnc router or look at leasing or financing options?
· How will I justify the investment (ie how soon can I get a return, what productivity improvements am I looking for, do I have new products or revenue streams in mind)?
According to a leading West Australian supplier of cnc woodworking, Procam, a milling machine can cost anything from a couple of thousand dollars to over $150 000 for a customised machine for heavy duty production. It is possible to upgrade equipment (eg from a 3-axis router to a 4 or 5 axis machine) but it can make more sense to purchase the larger machine upfront rather than upgrade it over time. The software can be customised for individual applications, and many CAD programmes are also compatible with many of the CNC router models. Their advice is to visit various local vendors if possible, and get them to demonstrate some of their equipment.
If staff training is an issue, choose a machine that is easy to use (as some are more difficult than others).
Be sure to select the vendor as carefully as you select your machine. Always try and purchase from an established supplier with a proven track record. After-sales service, installation support, maintenance and training are essential – and remember to check the warranties. It is also worth checking whether installation is possible without technical help, or whether it’s worth having the cnc router professionally installed by the vendor.
And as is the case with any major purchase, remember the Latin saying of ‘caveat emptor’, meaning ‘let the buyer beware. A milling machine could transform an ordinary business into an extraordinary one, but it’s always worth doing the homework first and having no regrets later.
