How to Choose Battery Powered Drills - Portable Power For Your Projects by Robyn Walter
If we looked in the toolboxes of the average DIYer, I wouldn't mind betting that amongst the selection of screwdrivers, hammers, screws & nails there would also be Battery Powered Drills. When it comes to many jobs around the home or garden many people would be lost without their power tools.
In the case of the cordless drill, technology has advanced so much that you can find a variety that are comparable in power to their corded cousins, due to advances in batteries many are also lightweight & can be found with price tags to suit all budgets.
If you are of a certain age you will probably recall that cordless drills lacked power, took what seemed like an age to charge & were heavy to boot.
Largely due to the advances in battery technology, more & more companies are using Lithium-Ion for portable devices, these have advantages over Ni-MH (nickel metal hydride) & Ni-Cd (nickel cadmium) they are
Lighter in weight

Offer longer run times
Deliver up to 2.5 times more recharge than Ni-Cd
Research also suggest that they don't suffer from what is known as memory effect, which in simple terms means that if you continue to re-charge a non Lithium-ion battery to full capacity but don't use the full charge, put it away & then charge again the next time you want to use it, the battery "forgets" how to use a 100% charge & will run out early. This doesn't happen with Lithium-ion due to the way they are made.
As with everything you buy, there will be different qualities & price ranges. For general Diy or the beginner you may choose something up to 12 volts. The professional tradesperson may select something up to 18 volts, for daily use on heavy duty projects. Those in the construction industries who may need to drill through concrete or steel are likely to need much more power, for them 36 volts are available.
When choosing battery powered drills there are a few pointers to look for
Battery & Voltage
Li-ion - The latest type available, they tend to be lighter. They can be more expensive due to high costs of manufacture.
Ni-MH - offer a long shelf life
Ni-Cd - One of the older types & most common in power tools. They are notorious for suffering the memory effect mentioned earlier & care needs to be taken to get the best run times out of them.
Voltage refers to the power the drill will produce, the higher the voltage the more power you can expect.
Weight
It will depend to a degree what you are planning to use the drill for, if for instance you are renovating your house & will need to hold the drill above your head for long periods you won't want something heavy. On the other hand if you just want to put up a few shelves now & then & don't want to spend too much, that may not be of so much concern.
Speed
A variable speed drill that is equipped with different gear ranges will enable you to control the speed. For heavy duty work & driving screws it is likely you will use low speeds. Faster speeds tend to produce cleaner holes.
