Woodcarving Tools - ToolsRUs
There are numerous types of woodcarving tools, each of which has a particular use. With the right tool in hand, you can carve, cut, chisel, gouge, smooth or sharpen. If you aspire to become a woodcarver, you will need a full set of quality woodcarving tools as well as know how to properly use each one.
a few choices include Chisel Sets, Surforms, Wire Brush
Most tools used for carving wood require just one hand when using them. These include knives, gouges, saws and other specialty tools. Your second hand is primarily used to hold the wood, but sometimes – as with a mallet and chisel – you need two hands to work. Blades are made from strong, tempered steel, while the handles are crafted from dense hardwood. Tools with differently shaped handles are available. There are palm-handled tools, power grips and other ergonomic designs meant to fit comfortably in the hand.
Different tools include numerous carving knives, small detail knives, mill knives and Swedish hook knives. Fishtail gouges, V-parting gouges, straight gouges, spoon gouges and U-shaped gouges are other common tools. A selection of chisels, a wooden mallet and a coping saw are other tools needed by a carver.
To cut, pare or smooth wood, you will use carving knives of varying size. Different gouges feature some type of curved or angled cutting edge and are used to carve out hollows, curves and to make rounds. A coping saw is a quick way to cut off a chunk of wood, while chisels of various size are used to make lines in wood or to clean up flat surfaces. You use a wooden mallet to apply the necessary cutting force to the handle end of the mallet. V-tools create angled parts in wood and add emphasis to lines, and a Veiner or U-tool makes deep, U-shaped gouges. A honing stone and strop are needed to sharpen carving tools.
Woodcarving techniques include whittling, relief carving, chip carving, flat-plane carving and caricature carving. A few of the things a woodcarver can accomplish include make full-3D carvings, semi-3D pictures or panoramas in relief or carving decorative text into wood. Wood carvings can also be used to make prints – an ancient art form. Some carvers just like whittling – making things out of raw wood using little more than a carving knife.
