Transmission Replacement - Learn the Steps to Complete This Task by Alfred Ardis
If you need a new transmission for your car, it may be possible to do it on your own. Before you attempt a transmission replacement, make sure you have the right tools and know the basic steps to get started.
If you are having some car trouble and find that you need a transmission replacement, you may be able to do it yourself. Of course, if you do not have much time or patience, you are probably better off taking it to a professional to get the work done. However, if you are low on money and have some time to spare, you can at least try to replace this crucial piece of your car. Having a friend who is knowledgeable about cars may also help, as will some basic tips for getting started.
The first tool you will need is a floor jack to raise the car off the ground so that you can get under it safely. This is why it is best to have someone helping, as getting under a vehicle at any time can be dangerous, especially when you have no one around to call for help if necessary. Note that you will also need jack stands, a set of wrenches, a torque converter holding instrument, and transmission jack.
The next step is to loosen the fluid cables that are connected to the radiator, as well as the link cables connected to the transmission. Use your wrench to take the u-bolts out of the back part of the vehicle, and then push the drive shaft away. You should then remove the speedometer gear assembly. In order to go further with the transmission replacement, you will have to raise the old one up and remove the lower bell housing's cover, along with loosening all the bolts in the area.
The transmission replacement is almost complete after you slide out the old one and put the new one in, and then turn it until you can hear it click into place. Put the vacuum lines and cross member back into place, and then lower the vehicle. Be sure to also put the gear assembly, drive shaft, and all bolts back into place.
If you do not know what most of these parts are, you should find out before attempting to complete this job on your own. If you are not somewhat adept at repairing cars, it is likely best that you leave this repair to the professionals since this task requires some knowledge of cars. However, if you have the tools, a friend to help, and the patience and determination to learn the car parts and this process, feel free to set a day aside to complete this chore.
