Hand Saws - ToolsRUs
Modern hand saws are distinguished from each other by their length, shape, the number of teeth per inch on the saw blade and the precise method with which they cut. Woodworkers of all types, from luthiers and toy makers to furniture craftsmen appreciate a good hand saw. Electric saws may be fast and convenient, great for cranking out cuts quickly, but hand saws are still used because they are accurate and make extremely clean cuts.
a few choices include Hand Drills, Hexagon Keys, Sliding Bevel
Two of the most basic types of hand saws are the cross-cut and the rip varieties. They both feature comfortable wooden or fiberglass handles connected at the wide end to a long, flexible blade that tapers towards the working end. With their set of knife-like teeth, cross-cut saws are meant to be used when cutting against the grain of wood. Rip saws, by contrast, are meant to cut with the grain. This standard type of hand saw typically possesses between seven and twelve saw teeth per inch and come in a number of thicknesses. Both kinds are commonly twenty or so inches long and are good all-purpose tools.
Specialty saws used for making detailed shoulder cuts include carcass saws, a type featuring a rectangular blade, more TPI. When needing to make very precise cuts to join wood, tenon saws and dovetail saws are frequently used. These saw types resemble a carcass saw in their basic shape, but they make cleaner cuts since they have even more teeth per inch. Another specialty tool, called a coping saw, features a small, tube-like handle attached to a U-shaped metal bracket, between the ends of which is a thin blade. Great for making short, precise cuts, coping saws have very fine teeth and are often used by toy makers, luthiers and carvers.
Backsaws, hacksaws, pruning saws, floorboard saws, keyhole saws and curved inlay saws are a few of the other types commonly used. Japanese saws are prized by many carpenters for their precision and sharpness. They feature a long, straight handle attached in line to the blade. From making rough timber cuts to fine dovetail and other precise cuts, there are Japanese saws of many kinds. These exotic tools cut on the backstroke as you pull it towards you, similar to other kinds of saws. Others make their cuts on the push or forward stroke.
