Before taking any trailer off road, it is very important that you have taken the required safety measures and that you are 100% prepared for the journey ahead.
For starters you need to evaluate if your car will be able to tow the trailer in question. Remember that vehicles have certain limitations on the weight that they can carry or pull, as a result it's very imperative that you ensure that your trailer is not too heavy for your car. When calculating the weight of your trailer you need to determine the overall weight - in other words, don't neglect to add the weight of the load on your trailer to your actual trailer weight.
When taking a trailer off road it's very important that the trailer is properly balanced and that all items on the trailer are thoroughly secured. Remember that things can move around with the smallest bump or ditch in the road and if you have many unfastened items in the trailer, these will move about and possibly break. If the weight of the cargo is not properly balanced it will cause your vehicle to sway across the road and both your car and trailer might end up on their roofs along the way! Use tie-down straps where possible to make sure that your cargo will not be bouncing around while you are on your way to that intimate hideaway in the bush! Bear in mind that ropes and tie-downs might expand a bit, particularly when new, therefore it is a good idea to fasten them again after you have driven some time.
Ensuring that you will be able to stop when necessary, is a non-negotiable element when towing a trailer off road. Trailer brakes come in different shapes and sizes and it is crucial that you have appropriate brakes on your trailer. If you all of the sudden have to reduce speed or come to a complete stop and your trailer's brakes fall short, you will be in big trouble! Always take the trailer around the block for a quick brake check before leaving on your long trip.
