Taking care of your diamond bit is the most important part. Here are some tips on how to take care of your drill bit. Lubrication is the easiest way of taking care of the drill bits. Water or coolant reduces the heat build-up, it prolongs the life of your drill bit and helps avoid heat fracture of the product. Oil based lubricant do not work well on diamond drill bits.
When drilling with diamond drill bits, primary concern is getting enough water on the edge of the drill bit, no mater what method you going to use.
When drilling fiberglass, the drill can be used either wet or dry, but make sure that the water has a little amount of water just enough to make the drill wet. In drilling glass or ceramics, soft ceramic tile and porcelain, the dust should be dissipate into the water. When drilling hard materials, it should have small amount of water constantly running over the drill bit.
One trick to get enough water is by putting plastic jug or bottle with a small hole near the bottom of the drill, next to the drill hole in which water will leak to provide continuous lubrication when drilling.
If the drill bit becomes yellow, brown or black (the burn marks) around its tip, it's an indication of heat caused by too much pressure on the drill. If the hole is completely drilled onto the materials it is also important to lighten up on the pressure when the drill bit is near the material. Always keep your drill in tiptop shape by caring the power cord and always checked its electrical problems. Please note that early detection can save bigger problems later.
When drilling use protective gear on your face especially on your eyes. Use hearing protection to avoid deafness and gloves for hand protection.
The life span of a diamond drill bit depends on the hardness and abrasiveness of the material being drilled. It also depends on the thickness of the material and the speed of the drill bit and use of adequate lubrication. Significantly, the hardness and abrasiveness can vary. Materials may look similar but they have varying degrees of hardness and abrasiveness. An electroplated diamond drill bit under ¾ may last for 200 to 300 holes or more.
