Air Compressors
Air compressors come in all shapes and sizes and have as many different usages as they are different.
Most people are familiar with the smaller air compressors such as the ones used in gas stations or another vehicle service trucks. Reciprocating or Piston air compressors are the ones we commonly see. They force air into a certain compartment and then release it through valve systems such as tire hoses or to operate drills such as the ones used in tire shops. They very much resemble internal combustion engines as they have valves, cylinders, pistons, and housing blocks. These are the reciprocating air compressors. The piston air compressors work the same way. The air compressors can work off of electricity, battery or gasoline.
Rotary screw compressors work differently in the way that they compress the air. They push air between two metal screws and the housing that they are in. As the screws turn, the air is dispersed by the pressure. The rotary sliding vane air compressors that have a rotor, stator and eight blades. The slotted rotor creates a crescent-shaped area that is cooled by oil lubricating and the motion of the eight blades so the air is compressed and then pushed out. Both rotary air compressors are called positive displacement.
Centrifugal air compressors work quite differently in the way that the air is compressed and then dispersed. They use rapidly rotating impellers to accelerate the air and the diffuser to decelerate the air, causing the increased pressure so the machine uses velocity to increase the air pressure. This process is called dynamic compression. All centrifugal air compressors use the impellers and diffusers along with intercoolers during various stages to cool the air and also reduce condensation to avoid erosion inside the machine.
Air compressors are judged by horsepower and how they are used to do the work the owner needs to be done. The smaller air compressors are the ones that mechanics and tire sales stores use but not always. Depending on the amount of volume that the business does, some of these places prefer to use the larger industrial air compressors. A busy service area in an automobile dealership would require industrial air compressors as would a tire company that depends solely on the air compressors to remove lug nuts off of a customer's tire and then replace it with a new tire. It would take a high production air compressor to complete the constant turnover.
It is up to the individual business of which type of air compressor they chose to use.
