Giving you all of the leverage and fastening power you need when working by hand, socketry and socket sets are extremely useful tools. Sets come a numerous sizes, from small, dozen-piece sets to extensive sets with ninety pieces or more. The extent of a socket set’s use to you will determine how many pieces you need.

Socket wrenches or ratchets are handled shafts with a square drive protruding from one end. The ratcheting mechanism is controlled via a switch that is positioned opposite the drive. Cylindrical in shape, sockets feature a female end to attach to a ratchet. On the other side is their hollow. Inside the hollow you find either 6 or 12 internal points. 6-point sockets can only be used on hex nuts or bolts, while 12-point sockets work on square and hex-shaped fasteners. Metric, American and imperial socket measurements are used. Common metric sizes range from 3mm up to 50mm. Deep sockets are used for spark plugs and other deep-set bolts.
Other tools help to make a good, complete socket set. These include extension bars which increase the reach of socket, good for hard-to-reach nuts and bolts. Attach a converter to a small-drive ratchet to use with a big-drive socket, or the other way around.
