And justifiably so - it doesn't take all that much practice or expensive equipment to match or exceed the quality of what you can afford to purchase. Plus your pieces can include your own personal touches as well as features for specific family members. Home woodworking can be easier than you think, and you can get started at a lot less cost than you might imagine.
When you're first starting, you'll probably want to work from a set of plans. You can find these in various magazines, as well as local lumberyards and home-improvement stores. You'll soon find yourself making your own tweaks and modifications, and before long you'll be designing your own projects. Though for complex projects, most of still stick to purchased plans.
Tools
It's important even for beginners to have quality tools. They'll be easier to use, deliver better results, and just might last a lifetime. Many plans and project articles will list the necessary tools. Looking through several projects you're interested in should give you a list of tools specific to the sort of projects you prefer. It's also important to have a good workspace. This could be an entire separate workshop out-building, a small corner in the garage, or anything in between. Don't forget to consider how much room you have in selecting projects and tools. You also need to set aside space for wood storage and getting large projects in and out.
Besides the garage, your workshop could be in a basement or even a roofed patio. Just so long as it stays good and dry all year long. It's also important to have excellent lighting for good safety. It'll also make your working easier and more pleasant. Besides tools and supplies, you'll also need a sturdy workbench and some means to keep your tools stored and organized. It's generally best to start out with the minimum, and expand based on your experience and encountered needs.
Learning
We've already touched on one source of learning materials - magazines and books. You can of course find these in local bookstores and various other shops. You're likely to find the best at lumberyards and stores that specialize in tools. You can also find instructional articles and woodworking plans online. Large home-improvement stores such as Home Depot occasionally offer classes in various aspects of woodworking, and you can also find surprisingly inexpensive classes at local community colleges.
