Reviewing The Various Types Of Hammers Available

Hammers are regarded as the oldest tools in existence, and they were presumably the devices with which other tools were first made. The oldest hammer we’re aware of was most likely worked with about 2-1/2 million years ago to craft ancient knives or spear heads. Happily, now we simply buy our blades and save the hammers for nails, metal punches and sometimes an unfortunate thumb. The three very common types of hammers are explained in this article, along with an example of specific products. Don't forget to look at the Air Wrench.

A claw hammer is intended mostly for hammering nails into other materials. Occasionally, the claw end may be required to eliminate nails that were sloppily hammered in by some other guy. The head on a claw hammer is fashioned using somewhat brittle steel, therefore claw hammers are not intended for metalwork. However, they are quite effective against wood, MDF and the other guy’s thumb. Also, be sure not to miss the Air Grinders.

Stanley offers a well made 16 oz claw hammer mounted on a fiberglass handle that might look incredibly cool in your tool chest. The high-visibility yellow handle would be easy to see in the tool chest, and the handle’s fiberglass material and textured rubber make it easy to work with, while the heat treated head makes it hard on nails.

Ball-peen hammers are set apart from claw hammers seeing as they use a ball-shaped strike surface and do not have a claw-end. A ball-peen hammer is employed in metalworking processes for jobs like driving punches and chisels with enough force to dent metal. In some circumstances, it can be employed to form sheet metal if the standard machinery is unavailable. As a result of the way these kinds of hammers are employed, they are not very likely to flatten thumbs, while knuckles occasionally become collateral damage. Klein Tools, Inc. markets a 12.5 inch ball peen hammer which has a high-carbon steel head. The straight-grain hickory handle gives extra force to the strike and is adequately resilient for years of use.

A sledgehammer includes a large head, flattened on both sides and is naturally somewhat heavier than the other two types of hammers. Sledgehammers are intended to bring to bear a bigger thump than the smaller hammers and are not very concerned with precision. These hammers are normally meant for driving spikes and are very useful for demolition of many materials. Pony offers a 10-pound sledgehammer attached to a three foot fiberglass handle which ensures the impact focuses on the object, instead of the person holding this hammer. The steel head is heat treated for resilience, and the strike surfaces in addition to the sides are treated to inhibit rust.

Hammers are fairly ancient and incredibly useful tools. They may be used for driving, flattening, punching, and now and then for demolition. No self respecting tool box needs to be in public without at least one or two of these all-purpose tools. As an aside, they are definitely not designed for thumbs, fingers or other carbon-based targets, so make sure that other guy keeps his paws out of your path.
