Giving you all of the leverage and fastening power you need when working by hand, socketry and socket sets are extremely useful tools. Socket sets provide a mechanic with a wide selection of parts in many sizes, and sets come in small and large varieties. It all depends on what you need.
In a set, you typically find at least two wrenches, numerous interchangeable heads or sockets and a selection of accessories. Extension bars, converters and a universal joint adaptor are among the accessories included in addition to the wrenches and sockets.
Wrenches or ratchets are basically steel shafts with a machined handle and a protruding square-shaped drive 90 degrees to the shaft at the working end. The ratcheting mechanism is controlled via a switch that is positioned opposite the drive. To change the direction in which force is applied, flip the switch. Without you having to change the direction of your hand movement as with a spanner, the alternating ratchet mechanism allows you to tighten or loose a fastener depending on the switch’s position. Male-end square drives come in small and large sizes. To function properly, the male end must match the female end on a given socket. Converters can be used to move up or down in size.
Cylindrical-shaped sockets have a square-shaped female end to fit over the ratchet drive. The hollow, working end is on the opposite side of the socket. The hollow has either a 6- or a 12-point internal shape. 12-point sockets can fit over the appropriate hex-shaped or square fastener, while the 6-point type only works with hex nuts or bolts. Sockets come in metric, American and imperial measurements. Metric sockets range in size from 3mm to 50mm in diameter. Deep sockets are used for spark plugs and other deep-set bolts.
A number of other tools are found in a good socket set. Extension bars increase the reach of the socket which is handy for hard-to-access fasteners. Attach a converter to a small-drive ratchet to use with a big-drive socket, or the other way around. A universal joint is an articulated accessory that allows you to bend the wrench if it’s convenient to do so.
