How to Perform the Wheel Bearing Replacement by Matej
Introduction
If you are seriously considering the safety of you immediate family when you take your car out on the roads due to the wobbling wheels of the car, you are in need of performing replacement. However before going for it decide which wheel bearings need replacement.
Most vehicles generally employ two different categories. The older vehicles used to have serviceable wheel bearings. Almost all the new vehicles however make use of hub bearing assemblies which are internally press bearings and it is not possible to service them. But these both kinds might fail after some use. Remember these bearings are performing in difficult conditions involving heat and friction. They are in constant need of lubrication. However the bearings do wear off after some use no matter how well you service them.
Tools for replacement
Channel locks, grease packer, mechanics wire, honing stone, bearing grease, needle nose pliers, straightedge screwdriver or other small pry tool, dial indicator with magnetic base, ratchet and socket set, lug wrench, hammer, jack and jack stand.
Replacement
First check the wheel bearings of your car to decide whether there is any need of replacement. In case there is, get new bearings and replace the older ones with them. Now mount these new bearings into their place. There is no need to follow a certain order for placing new bearings in their place. When the bearings get seated in their correct position, apply grease and then a new seal. Now, re-install the vehicle rotor and after which reconnect the vehicle brakes into their proper positions and finally remount the vehicle tires.
After completing this procedure for replacing, you must make sure that the bearing nut is tightened properly. This ensures that you will have a peace of mind when you drive your car on the roads with your family.
Signs to look for with impending wheel bearing replacement
Generally speaking, replacement of older bearings by the newer ones is an effective way of saving cost. This is so because it saves money, effort and time. So, whenever the bearings get crunchy, broken or just plain worn out, there is a need for replacement immediately.
Whenever there is a need of exerting too much pressure onto the brake pads of your car, you need to inspect wheel bearings with certain methods. It is quite possible that you will get away with minor greasing in some of the cases. But if the bearings are damaged quite badly, there is no choice but to replace them.
Another clear indication of problems is the noise. But in case of noise there might not be any need to dismantle various parts. You can jack the wheel and if you see very little or no free movement, it means the wheel bearings are fine otherwise you may have to replace them fast.
Summary
The main reason for the deterioration of wheel bearings is ignorance. So in case you are alert, you may actually avoid this bearing replacement or if required get it done in time for avoiding further damage to them.
