To turn different kinds of screw, you need to use the right mating tool for the job, a screwdriver. Screwdrivers feature a basic design comprised of steel shaft fitted with a particular type of driver head and a handle with which to grip the tool. Available in numerous sizes and with drive heads to match all types of screws, screwdrivers are among the most commonly used tools. They give the operator the mechanical advantage necessary to apply torque or rotational force to a fastener or some other type of machine element. Screwdrivers are available in numerous manual varieties as well as electric and battery-powered models.
Screwdriver heads are designed to match with the specifications of a particular type of screw, both in terms of size and drive head style. The shaft head is machined into a certain shape, becoming the male mate that matches with the female drive head of a fastener. The two most common screw heads are slotted and Philips head. Slotted drivers have flat heads that resemble a paddle with a squared-off tip. The width of the paddle varies. Forming a perfect cross, Philips head drivers feature two perpendicular tips. At each of the four points of intersection, the inner corners are slightly rounded, forming four convex arcs.
The square-shaped Robertson head and the Frearson driver - which resembles a Philips head driver, but it is smaller and has no rounded inner corners - are other driver types. Specialty screwdrivers designed to work with other screws include mortorq, pozidriv and supadriv. With distinctly shaped heads, these tools have very unique designs. With its four wing-shaped tips, a mortorq driver resembles a pin or fan when you look at it head on. Pozidriv drivers are identical to Philips head models but feature a second cross-like set of flanks rotated 45 degrees to the main cross. Likewise, supadriv heads look a lot like Philips heads, but their inner corners are squared off rather than arced.

Magnetic driver heads are commonly used to hold onto the fasteners, making for easier application.
