Tell Me All About Trollbeads by Lisa Griffiths
Trollbeads are used by many not just as a piece of jewellery but as a way of marking milestones in their life. As they carry so much meaning a bracelet or necklace is worn or kept throughout a person's life as a piece of their history like a family keeps a photo album.
1. Where do Trollbeads come from
2. Do I have genuine Trollbeads
3. How, by using Trollbeads, you can design unique jewellery easily
History:-
Trollbeads were designed by a silversmith called Soren Nielsen in Denmark in 1976. Originally there were five silver charms with a hole in the middle that could be strung on a piece of leather. They were called Trollbeads because the first beads looked like the faces of trolls. In traditional Danish folklore a troll is a cute little forest creature that steals and hides your things as well as tricking you. A troll in other parts of the world is a mythical cave-dwelling being depicted in folklore as either a giant or a dwarf, typically having a very ugly appearance.
Trollbeads started off being made out of silver but now include glass, gold, gems even precious stones so they can become expensive. Murano glass is used in most Trollbeads. It is a high quality glass, as Murano glass blowers are accomplished glass artists. Murano glass comes from the island Murano close to Venice in Northern Italy.
Later, in the 1980s a chain with a lock was introduced so that owners could change bead combination. There are now many locks available, for silver and gold chains, that have their own design such as a flower, a fish or an elephant! You can still buy leather bracelets though.
The speciality of Trollbeads is they are not mass-produced, and the charms can have a mythical meaning or astrological story behind them.
Are they genuine:-
There are ways to know if you Trollbeads are genuine. They are marked as follows:-
Silver/Glass: 925S LAA
Gold beads: 750 LAA
Gold chains: 585 LAA
Although silver and gold beads were first stamped from January 2006 and glass beads were first stamped from May 2008 so many genuine beads made before that time are not stamped.
Easy-peasy Trollbead jewellery:-
With Trollbeads it is not like typical bead work where you need pliers and findings, etc. All you need is a bracelet and/or necklace, and you add the beads as much or as few as you prefer in the order you want so your bracelet or necklace of Trollbeads can be unique to you.
If you already have a Pandora chain only large Trollbeads will fit on them although Pandora beads will fit on Trollbead chains.
You can only buy Trollbeads, you cannot (at the moment) have custom made Trollbeads designed for you.
They are great for young people who can't make beads because of the dangers of lamp working and using tools such as pliers. The beads have a hole through the middle so are ring shaped to simply slip on your necklace or bracelet.
If you know somebody who is hard to please or fussy about their jewellery start them with a Trollbead necklace or bracelet, and have them make up their own jewellery by looking through the hundreds of Trollbeads available.
