Great info resource on Lbs Torque Wrench
Wrenches: Some info by Allaric Saltzman
Labor today has gotten very expensive and it actually turns out to be cheaper to purchase the correct equipment and do the work on your own. The most useful equipment is the impact wrench. It is used for tightening and loosening bolts and most of the equipments are bolted. So in order to want to repair them you would have to open the bolts. However there are various things that need to be considered before purchasing and impact wrench such as the type of impact wrench you wish to purchase and the equipment that you would need with it.
Before buying one you need to decide which type you want- the air type or electric type. Air impact wrenches have multiple advantages over electric ones. In case you already own an air compressor the air wrench will cost much less than its electric prototype. Even if you do not own the compressor putting in some extra cash and buying one is a great idea as the compressor can be used for various other equipments too like drills, sanders, etc. The electric type is cordless in nature and thus requires batteries to supply power. For this purpose there is an extra slot at the bottom of the wrench which makes it bigger and bulkier as compared to the air type. This in turn results in a lower power to weight ratio in electric ones. In electric ones when the battery drains out you need to stop your work whereas in case of the air impact wrenches you can take a break whenever you wish so long as the compressor is working fine. They are basically useful in case you need to carry it in your car for emergency purposes.
In case you decide to purchase an air impact wrench then you need to make sure you own an air compressor of appropriate torque. If you purchase a compressor supplying 220 ft-lbs maximum torque to open bolts demanding 80-100 ft-lbs then you have made a blunder. This is because the "working torque" is much less than the "maximum torque". In addition to that you need to take in to consideration weathering such as rusting in which case there would be more torque required than that specified by the company to open the bolt. Thus, in such cases going for a 4500 ft-lbs compressor is an ideal choice. Another important thing to consider is the size drive you need you impact wrench to be. For this you will need to know which type of bolts you are going to be opening most often.
Once you have decided these few basic things you are all set to purchase your own one. Even though most people prefer air impact wrenches in certain cases electric impact wrenches are necessary. Thus, first decide the operation you will be needing it for and then purchase one.
