Sockety and socket sets are handy mechanic’s tools necessary for working with a variety of fasteners including nuts and bolts. Sets come a numerous sizes, from small, dozen-piece sets to extensive sets with ninety pieces or more. The extent of a socket set’s use to you will determine how many pieces you need.

Socket wrenches or ratchets are handled shafts with a square drive protruding from one end. A switch that controls the ratcheting mechanism is opposite the drive. Inside the hollow you find either 6 or 12 internal points. 12-point sockets can fit over the appropriate hex-shaped or square fastener, while the 6-point type only works with hex nuts or bolts. Sockets come in metric, American and imperial measurements. Common metric sizes range from 3mm up to 50mm. Both shallow and deep sockets are available.
A complete socket set contains a number of other tools as well. These include extension bars which increase the reach of socket, good for hard-to-reach nuts and bolts. Converters, as mentioned, are used to match small-drive ratchets with big-drive sockets and vice versa. A universal joint is an articulated accessory that allows you to bend the wrench if it’s convenient to do so.
