Sockety and socket sets are handy mechanic’s tools necessary for working with a variety of fasteners including nuts and bolts. Everything from smaller sets with a dozen or so pieces to full-size sets with ninety or more pieces are available. It all depends on what you need.
Sets typically contain two socket wrenches, a number of interchangeable heads or sockets and a variety of accessories and add-ons. In addition to the wrenches and attachable sockets, most sets come extension bars, a converter or two and a universal joint adaptor.
Socket wrenches or ratchets are handled shafts with a square drive protruding from one end. Opposite the drive is a switch that controls the ratcheting mechanism. To change the direction in which force is applied, flip the switch. The position of the switch determines the direction of force, and the alternating ratchet mechanism allows you to loosen or tighten a fastener without having to alternate the movement of your hand as with a spanner. Ratchet square drives come in small and large varieties. The size of the male drive fitting must accord with the female end found in each socket. To make it work, you have to have the right female-ended socket or use a converter.
Cylindrical in shape, sockets feature a female end to attach to a ratchet. The hollow, working end is on the opposite side of the socket. The hollow has either a 6- or a 12-point internal shape. 6-point sockets can only be used on hex nuts or bolts, while 12-point sockets work on square and hex-shaped fasteners. Metric, American and imperial socket measurements are used. 3mm to 50mm metric sockets are common to basic socket sets. Deep sockets are used for spark plugs and other deep-set bolts.
A number of other tools are found in a good socket set. These include extension bars which increase the reach of socket, good for hard-to-reach nuts and bolts. Converters, as mentioned, are used to match small-drive ratchets with big-drive sockets and vice versa.
