Removing the finish from indoor woodwork
The areas that will will need attention are: doors, windows, skirting boards, stairs and banisters and decorative features including architraves, picture rails, building cupboards and panels. You'll find two techniques to strip paint or varnish from wood in the home: dry scraping and heat stripping.
Paint scraping
Suitable for little areas only. Scrape the flaking paint off with a hook scraper or a shave hook. Then use a medium sand paper.
Heat stripping
You can find two methods to apply heat to paint: with a blowtorch or an electric hot-air gun.
The electric hot air gun is a recent innovation and although not as fast as a torch, is preferable for various reasons: some people today are nervous of the flame of a blowtorch, but with a hot-air gun there's no flame, and there's less likelihood of scorching the wood, which is essential when you want to leave the surface bare. When employed outdoors, there is no danger of it being extinguished by a sudden gust of wind although it does limit where you can use it. A blowtorch it is still difficult to beat when working on fascia boards.
How you can use brushes
Brushes really should have natural hog's-hair bristles, which pick up extra paint than cheaper ones. Look for bristles that do not moult and are tapered at the ends for a smooth finish - especially important when painting with eggshell and gloss.
Purchase a range of widths 25-100mm for wood and metalwork, plus a 20mm angled cutting-in brush for parting the edge of the wall along with a 12mm brush for the glazing bars on windows. When you need to paint the walls with a brush, decide on a 100mm brush.
Ways with brushes
Hold a wide brush by the stock - the component that joins the bristles to the handle - and hold a narrow one like a pencil.
When dipping the brush into the paint, only cover half of the bristle with emulsion, one-third with gloss. Remove the surplus by pressing the bristles against the side of the tin, not the rim, where paint may dry and lumps may possibly fall into the tin.
Tie a length of string tautly across the opening of a paint kettle or paint tin, so you can wipe excess paint off the brush as you lift it out of the paint.
For easy cleaning of a brush used for solvent-based paints, drill a hole in the handle of the brush and push a long nail through. Suspend it in a jar of white spirit.
Whenever you take a break from painting, wrap brushes in cling film so they do not dry out. As soon as you stop for the day, clean brushes in detergent for water based paints, or white spirit for solvent-based.
