FYI on Cutter Steel Handles
Uses For Hammers And Mallets - ToolsRUs
Among the most fundamental of all hand tools are hammers and mallets. Among the oldest tools known to man, they are right up there with squares, planes, levels and wedges. Whether driving nails, forging metal, carving wood, breaking up stone or splitting logs, this type of tool provides tremendous impact force.
Except for sledgehammers and mauls, which feature long handles meant for two hands, most hammers are single-handed tools with short, relatively lightweight handles. Hammer handles are commonly made from wood, but some designs feature a handle made of fiberglass, strong plastic or metal. The head of a hammer is what defines the parameters of the tool’s use. Hammer heads are made of strong steel, but some feature copper plating. Mallets, on the other hand, feature wooden or rubber heads, for they are used when less impact force is desired.
a few choices include Rasp Files, Impact Drivers, Torx Screwdrivers
The bulk of the weight of a hammer is centered in its head. This allows a lot of force to be generated when you swing the tool in a given direction. The pendulum-like motion of your arm when swinging a hammer directs the force to drive a nail, shape metal or break up stone.
With its flat-faced, cylindrical driving head and curved, split claw on the opposite side, a claw hammer is a common carpenter's tool used for driving nails and prying things up. Similar are framing hammers, except they usually feature a small axe rather than a claw opposite the driver. Other handheld types include ball-peen hammers with a standard head on one side opposite a rounded, hemispherical end. These are used in mechanical and metalworking applications. With a wedge-shaped end opposite the driving end, split-peen and cross-peen hammers are two variations on the ball-peen design. Other single-hand hammers include small sledgehammers, dead blow hammers and tack hammers.
Mallets are used to lightly impact a secondary tool such as a chisel or punch. A wood- or rubber-head mallet provides far less impact force, ideal for applications that require a delicate touch. Two such disciplines that commonly use mallets are woodcarving and leatherwork.
Tools often used with hammers and mallets include chisels, punches, mauls, wood-splitting wedges and anvils.
