Woodworkers can make do without some tools, but other they cannot do without. One of the simplest yet most useful of tools, a clamp is basically a fastening device. By the application of inward pressure, a clamp prevents two or more objects from separating or moving. Commonly used in woodworking, clamps keep pieces of wood held firmly together when gluing them. Keeping pieces tightly together, a clamp or clamps give the bonding agent time to dry.

Clamps are generally only used on a temporary basis, although some are permanent. One example of a permanent clamp is a hose clamp, a circular piece of metal used in plumbing and automotive applications. Clamps are used for purposes other than allowing pieces of glued wood to dry. If you want to secure a tool to a work bench or hold a piece of scrap wood atop it, you will use a clamp. Clamps may be made entirely out of metal, or they may combine wooden and metal components. Still others feature a combination of metal and high-impact plastic.
One common type is a pipe clamp, made entirely from metal and comprised of varying length of pipe, one moveable and one fixed clamp head or jaw. Because of the length of the pipe and the moveable jaw, builders are able to secure boards a good distance apart, so pipe clamps are often used in cabinet making. Once the moveable jaw is locked into place, the screw mechanism on the fixed jaw is tightened to form the hold. A smaller all-metal variety is known as the C- or G-clamp. Useful in carpentry and welding, it features a C-shaped piece of steel with a threaded bolt coming up from the bottom with a flat surface on the moveable end and a flat surface at the fixed of the C. To use it, the operator spins the handle attached to the bolt until the two contact surfaces of the clamp are brought to their respective sides of the boards, metalwork or other materials to be joined.
Wooden handscrews, one-handed bar clamps or quick grips, F-clamps, spring clamps and wooden cam clamps are other common types. Specialty clamps are used to hold frame sides at 90 degrees. You use a clamping mitre box instead of a standard mitre box to make special compound cuts in decorative crown moulding. As you can see, there are clamps specifically designed for virtually all woodworking uses.
