Wooden Surface Planes - ToolsRUs
Wood planes are used to flatten wood, reduce its thickness and to smooth out a particular surface. Planes are very simple woodworking tools, but among the most useful. Consistency over the entire wooden surface must be achieved in order to create square, true wooden creations. Numerous types of planes exist, most of which are used to flatten and smooth, but not all. Specialty planes make curves in wood or plow into it. For woodworkers who still build by hand, having a large selection of several kinds of planes is an absolute must.
a few choices include Dovetail Saw, Spokeshaves, Screwdriver Set
A plane’s design consists of a handle, base and cutter or blade. On the bottom of the base or sole of the plane is a slot. The blade does not protrude far out through the slot, just enough to take off thin layers of wood. Wood shavings should be removed uniformly when passing the plane over a board or other piece of stock. When wood is properly planed, high spots are leveled, thickness is reduced and the surface of the board becomes smoother. A pushing motion is the way to use the majority of planes. Some planes like Japanese smoothing and polishing planes are brought towards you. Bigger planes require two hands to use and feature a helper handle, while small planes need a single hand.
To remove the most wood at once, you use a scrub plane. More accurate than the scrub, a jack plane is the next tool to use when roughing out stock. To achieve the right flatness on wood, use a jointing plane. Before you can finish a piece of stock, go over it with a smoothing plane and perhaps a finer polishing or Japanese plane to get it extra smooth. Spokeshaves, shoulder planes and moulding planes are three specialty types. If you are working in tight spaces, use a bullnose plane, a plow plane when you want to gouge out small grooves and a finger plane for working with small pieces like toys. A compass plane can also be used to make curves in wood uniformly.
Transitional planes consist of a combination of wood and metal, while wooden planes are made entirely out of wood (except for the cutter). There are also all-metal planes with no wood parts except for maybe a helper handle, and infill planes that feature a metal body stuffed with dense, weighty wood.
