Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc with small additional quantities of iron and lead. The lead content is especially useful because it imparts good machine ability to the brass.
Brass is the preferred base metal for the manufacture of jewelry components such as cufflinks, brooches and charms. Brass has very good corrosion resistant qualities but the finish will dull and eventually go green in an oxidizing atmosphere therefore the finished item is usually electroplated in gold, silver, rhodium or chromium.
Brass can be plated in lots of other finishes for engineering purposes such as tinplate which is especially useful when soldering. Brass wire used in the electronics industry is often tinplated for just this purpose.
Brass has excellent cold working properties making it a favorite for wire drawing, stamping, punching, coining and deep drawing. Small brass components used in the manufacture of cufflinks can be made using some of these processes. For instance, the oval or circular cup into which a semi precious stone is mounted can be made from punched and drawn brass sheet.
The brass is usually supplied in a roll of thin sheet brass which can be automatically fed into the press tool. As the brass sheet progresses through the press tool various operations can be performed without the component leaving the tool. This method of manufacture reduces material handling and keeps operator involvement to a minimum which means the manufacturing costs are minimized. Even in western economies where wages are high the component cost can be kept low using this manufacturing method when the higher labour charges are offset against the savings found from reduced transportation costs. One example of a brass component formed using a press tool is the jewel cup or setting. A circular or oval disc is stamped out of the brass sheet and pressed down into a cup depression in the tool. This forms a circular or oval cup into which the semiprecious stone is inserted. Coining is as the name implies a way of making coins. A brass blank is placed into a coining tool and the punch which has a design etched into its face is pressed into the blank which deforms and takes the shape of the etching. The forces needed for this operation are quite high and specialist presses and tools are required for this manufacturing method. The speed of the press operation is as important as the power because at high speeds the brass will deform in a plastic fashion, i.e.; it behaves like plasticine and needs lower power to obtain the required deformation.
