Due to today's tight financial conditions, many families have decided not to rejuvenate their dated home because they cannot afford to. If you're in that same situation, you can rest easy that you can make your home look like new with a few enhancements without spending an arm and a leg in the process.
Stretching Your Remodeling Dollar
Start with fundamentals when mulling over a renovation. Start from the top of the room and work your way down. This is the basis for your home rehab project. If you have a “popcorn” ceiling, consider either repainting it a new, fresh color or hiring someone to resurface and retexurize it with a flat pattern. Don't forget to have a strong primer applied before your paint coat! Next, look at the walls and consider a neutral color that will flatter open and airy tones and will go with any designs and decorations. Make repairs to walls that have dents, nicks, or holes so they look like new again. Next, move on to the floor areas: are the baseboards and flooring in good repair? If you will be installing carpeting, choose a thick pile that is somewhere between brown and beige so that spills won't show as much and the carpet will be resistant to crushing for years to come.

Remodeling your bathrooms and kitchen are the best investments you can put into your house. If the cabinetry is in good structural shape, consider either restaining the existing cabinets or buying new doors. If you will be re-facing them, get a good Makita drill and detach the hinges and handles from the cabinet doors to free them. If needed, you can buy replacement cabinet doors from your local do-it-yourself store. To save even more, use the cabinets you have and refinish them. Again, detach the doors from the cabinets and then brush on a paint remover to the existing finish and use a scarping tool made from hard plastic just for this purpose. Once all trace of the old finish has been removed, sand the cabinets the beginning time with a drum sander using medium-grade sandpaper. A last sanding should be done with a fine-grit sandpaper after that. Remove all of the wood dust and then spread a wood conditioner to the cabinets. Finally, stain or paint the wood and complete it with two or three clear coats to protect the finished product from exposure to moisture.
