Golf Putting Drills
A pile of emphasis is placed on driving long and straight but lots of games are won or lost on the greens. If youwishto drastically decrease the number of strokes on your scorecard spend some time on golf putting drills you will improve your putting swiftly and cutback the amount of strokes on the green. Golf putting drills can be turned into games played with others which means that while you enjoy some convivial competition you are improving your putting. You can use specific drills to work on the types of putts that you have problems with. Every distance of putts can be improved with putting drills.
The following drills will improve your alignment, accuracy, weight eye and more. To make the drills more fun compete against other players.
Putting Stroke
Lay two clubs on the practice green, parallel, barely over a putter head width apart and align with the hole, so whenever you make a straight putt the ball will sink. This will educate you to to guide the putter straight back otherwise it will hit the clubs on the green. The blade of your putter also needs to be kept square during the stroke for the ball to drop in the hole.
Weight/Distance
You have to get a feel and touch for medium and long putting to gauge length. To hit the putt with the correct weight depends on your muscle memory being trained so that your brain sends a precise message to your muscles. To help to get a sense of weight and distance deep-seated in your game, for this golf putting drill, forget about the line for now. Bring about ten balls onto the practice green and stand about 15 – 40 feet (4.5 to 12 metres) away from the edge. Putt each ball towards the fringe trying to stop the ball as close as possible to the edge of the green without running up onto the fringe. Aiming for a wide target rather than a hole will improve your awareness and eye of length. You will feel confident with your judgement when faced with lengthy putts on the course by using this drill and cut the amount of putts down to 2 instead of 3 or more!
Short Putts
Develop your short putting through practicing this easy drill. Line up 5 or 6 balls on a level bit of green around 12in (30cm) apart beginning at about 3ft (1m) from the hole. Endeavour to hole the first ball. Once you have achieved the first ball down try the next one till you fail. Each instance you fail pick your balls up and position them where they were and begin again. The aim of this drill is to achieve getting all the balls in the hole without failing at all. Short putting, awareness and drive will become better by using this drill.
Feel for Weight
Putting without ever looking up to check where the ball has gone gives you an proper indication of your real feel for weight. Take approximately 10 balls and putt to an area on the green. Hit each ball to a spot around 25ft (7.5m) away. Hold your head downward between putts and hit the next ball. Try to keep everything the same – weight, line, rhythm. If your balls are near together you have achieved your goal. You get to look and see how good you did when the final ball has been struck. You should finish up with all your balls within a circle of 2ft (75cm) in diameter. If you are satisfied with your results repeat again with longer putts. Make the diameter of the circle larger by 6in (15cm) for each 5ft (1.5cm) in distance you add.
