With their simple, fundamental design, hammers and mallets are extremely common hand tools. Together with wedges, levels, planes and squares, the tools are some of the oldest in the history of man. They deliver a tremendous amount of impact force to drive nails, forge metal, carve wood, and break up stone as well as for other uses.
Except for sledgehammers and mauls, which feature long handles meant for two hands, most hammers are single-handed tools with short, relatively lightweight handles. Traditionally, handles are made of wood, but other materials include fiberglass, metal and high-impact plastic. The tool's precise use is determined by the shape, weight and material of its head. Hammer heads are made of strong steel, but some feature copper plating. By contrast, mallets feature heads made of rubber or wood, necessary when far less impact force is needed.

Most of the tool's weight is centered in its head. This allows a lot of force to be generated when you swing the tool in a given direction. It is this pendulum-like impact force that drives nails in a single blow, shapes metal and breaks up extremely rugged materials.
The claw hammer features a flat-faced, cylindrical head on one side for driving nails and a curved, split claw on the other used for pulling up nails or prying things up. Similar are framing hammers, except they usually feature a small axe rather than a claw opposite the driver. With a standard driving head opposite a rounded, hemispherical head, ball-peen hammers are other common handheld tools. This tool is often used in metalworking and for a variety of mechanical operations. Two variations on the ball-peen design are split-peen and cross-peen hammers with a wedge-shaped end oriented a particular way opposite the driver. Also used with a single hand are tack hammers, dead blow hammers and small sledgehammers.
For certain work, mallets are used, usually in combination with a secondary tool such as a chisel. Wooden and rubber-headed mallets are softer and thus used for work that requires more delicacy. Mallets are commonly used in leatherwork and woodcarving applications for just this reason.
