5 Table Saw Accessories That You Must Have by Alan Vryhof
These must have table saw accessories are just a few of the cool table saw accessories that are on the market. Some of them come with your saw but have aftermarket upgrades available and others you can find online or at your local hardware or home center stores.
1. Zero Clearance Inserts
Use this accessory to replace the guard around the blade. A zero clearance insert eliminates the space around the blade where bits of wood can fall under the saw and get lost. Also helps to keep wood from catching up near the blade.
2. Safety Glasses and Hearing Protection
Ok, I know that will actually bring the number up to 6 but safety is key with tables saws. If you use your tools for construction and are outdoors a lot, invest in a quality pair of anti-fog glasses. This is not the place to skimp on price, you only get one set of eyes and accidents happen. Good hearing protection is also vital, earmuffs are best but in a pinch the foam type will do.
3. Blades
There are many types and sizes of blades to consider. Dado blades allow you to cut large grooves in wood and are several blades stacked together. You can also find blades for cutting metal, laminate and other types of material. It is good to know which blade to use with which type of wood and desired cut.
4. Push Stick
How many times have you seen the cliche of the high school shop teacher missing a finger? Well the universal use of a push stick would have cut that danger down considerably. Push sticks are what you should use to push the wood through the saw and serve to keep your fingers firmly attached to your hands.
5. Pop In Splitter
Most saws have a splitter made into the blade guard. Occasionally you might have to run the saw without the guard so you should invest in a pop in type of splitter for these occasions. They keep the wood from binding up on the blade and also are helpful to reduce kickbacks.
The list of table saw accessories is fairly long but if you start out with these five, you can't go wrong.
