Seavington director getting ready for power tool race by Www.top-battery.com.au
A COMPANY director from Seavington St Mary will be putting his power tools to use next month - on the race track.
Mike Hawtin, who works at Loxton Groundcare in the village, will be taking part in the SIlverline cordless drill Drag Racing championship at The Fleet Air Arm Museum, RNAS Yeovilton on Sunday, September 25.
Some of the machines taking part can reach speeds of up to 90mph on a one mile straight - and while he will face tough competition Mike is hoping to improve on his fourth place last year in his build VAUCH.
Mike said: "I became involved in this sport purely by chance but soon became addicted to it. I was amazed at some of the ingenuity of other builder's machinery and the fun in racing a machine that I had built from scratch."
To take part in cordless Tool Racing you have to take a handheld power tool and build a racer out of it - whether it is one that runs up a wooden track or a racer for the ride on class.
Not only has Mike worked on engine modifications to VAUCH, he has also built a second racer for 2011 called HUSKY.
Silverline Tools offer new contestants help and advice to get things started and are hoping that the competition takes off this year, with Touring Car racers Jason Plato and his team mate Alex MacDowall also in attendance.
How to Refresh Power Tool Batteries
Power tool batteries that are rechargeable can develop a memory if they aren't used often or used to their full charge. Once a battery develops memory it can seem to be fully charged but when you use the tool, the battery will be dead within a few minutes. This is an annoying feature of rechargable power tool batteries that you can fix in just a few days with a couple of simple steps.
Hook the battery to the power tool and use the tool, or run the tool until the battery goes completely dead. Then leave it attached to the tool overnight.
Run the tool with the battery in the morning. If it will run the tool, use it until it goes completely dead. By doing this, you are essentially erasing the memory in the cordless drill battery and deleting the false empty cycle of the battery.
Place the battery on the charge only when it will not power the tool at all. Let it charge fully, which should take overnight.
Run the tool with the battery attached until it is again completely dead. Don't charge the battery again until it's completely dead.
Repeat the charge and drain process several times, and the battery will get better at holding a charge and charging completely.
