HVAC Gauges Determine Pressure Generated by Air Conditioning Compressor by Darren Pace
HVAC gauges are devices that determine the pressure generated by the compressor of an air conditioning system. When air conditioning repair technicians connect a manifold gauge set to the system the low pressure gauge side is connected to the low pressure side of the unit. If the idea is to check the pressure that is in the discharge line connecting the air conditioner high pressure side to the high pressure gauge hose is the way to go. There is another port that is used that is called the utility port and is where the vacuum pump is attached to add or remove refrigerant.
HVAC gauges are used to measure the pressure that is within the closed system of an air conditioner and evaluate the unit as well as troubleshoot what may be wrong with it. The manifold set is the most often used tool in the repair technician’s arsenal. They allow the repair tech to test the pressure in the system, purge the unit of nitrogen, check the pressure in the system, and transfer coolants as well as other tasks involved with servicing an air conditioning system.
HVAC gauges work in a very simple way. They are operated by opening and closing a hand valve. Once the valve is opened, the refrigerant flows from the low pressure chamber of the utility chamber through the low pressure chamber over to the high pressure side. Turning the hand valve counterclockwise will allow the pressure to flow to the low pressure side. A clockwise turn will close the port. It’s that simple.
A manifold gauge set is operated the same way for each side, with a turn of the valve counterclockwise to open and clockwise to close it again. One difference is when you have connected low pressure hoses to the low pressure side of the air conditioner. You will be able to automatically read the pressure.
Removing or adding refrigerant is done by opening the port on the utility chamber and then a vacuum is pulled on the system. All that is needed to check the pressure as well as temperature of a closed system is to simply connect the HVAC gauges to the unit.
Since there are a number of different options when choosing HVAC gauges, you will want to make sure of the type that you will be using most. Although there is always the option of purchasing more than one manifold gauge sets to suit the needs of a thriving air conditioning repair company, there is just no reason to purchase more than you need when one will do the trick.
For the individual who is servicing their own system, the only HVAC gauges that are needed are the ones that fit the system on their own home or automobile. This is sure to serve the few times that it will be needed over a period of several years.
