How to Clean the Condenser Coil in Air Conditioner? by Cheow Yu Yuan
Without the condenser coil, your air conditioner will not work. Condenser coil is the aluminum coil that surrounds the air compressor and dust usually gathers easily.
When your condenser coil becomes blocked with dirt, there will be serious problem. When the coil is blocked, the hot gas in the condenser coil cannot cool enough and it will overheat the condenser. When the condenser is overheated, it will break down eventually. Therefore, it is important to always keep your condenser coil clean. Cleaning the condenser coil is not difficult. Now, let me share with you a few tips to clean the condenser coil:
Before you can clean the coil, you need to get a few tools ready. You will need wrenches to remove the condenser fan, a garden hose with a nozzle and a sprayer to apply the cleaning solution. Before you clean the coil, please switch off the power of the outdoor unit. Then remove the fan from the condenser unit.
Next, wet the coil with your garden hose. When you are wetting the coil, make sure that the water pressure is not too high as it will damage the fins of the coil. Then use the cleaning solution to coat the inside and outside of the coil. Give a few minutes to let the solution work before you clean it off. After 10 minutes, use your garden hose to wash away the solution and any dirt on the coil. You should rinse the coil with clean water until it is clear of dirt and cleaning solution. Fix the fan back and restart the unit. When you are cleaning the condenser coil, it is advisable for you to wear gloves and eye protection because the cleaning solution contains very strong chemicals.
A clean condenser coil will enable your unit to run more efficiently. Do you know that an efficient air conditioner can save you a lot of electricity? So if you have a high electricity bill because of air conditioning, it is time to clean the condenser coil and make your unit work more efficiently.
A clean condenser will also allow your compressor to run cooler and give your air conditioner a longer life span. You should always clean your condenser coil at least once every year. If you do not want to do the dirty work, you can always hire a professional air conditioning servicing team to maintain your unit. For a list of air conditioning servicing companies, you can either do a search on Google or browse through your local directory like Yellow Pages.
