How to Repair Your Own Roof   by Ryan Stinson

If you've watched professional roofers swabbing a hot tar mop on a blazing summer's day, you have a lot of respect for what contractors do. They work long hours under the hot sun and find themselves in uncomfortable positions for extender periods of time. Perhaps you can be a hero in your own backyard by patching or fixing small sections of roof that have worn out or been damaged by the weather. Knowing how to roof takes practice. So, you may want to tackle the easiest, smallest jobs first. After you gain some experience, call in the experts when you're in over your head.

Repairing damaged roof shingles is a good beginner's project if you want to learn how to roof on your own. It's an easier project than trying to tackle an entire roof replacement. After setting your ladder safely, climb up and walk diagonally, inspecting from the edge toward the crown. Sometimes shingles curl back from the wind or are damaged by flying debris. You'll need tar, a good hammer, a small brush, a pry bar, and a replacement shingle or tile to complete the job. Pry up the damaged shingle, but don't force it back or you may damage it further. Inspect the paper or felt below for moisture, and dry it before adjusting the shingle.

How To Tackle Down Loose Shingles

Brush tar around the damaged edges of the shingle, and press it down into place. Then, swab tar around the edges of the shingle, over the top of the shingle, and over the edges of the adjoining shingles. You can repair damaged flashing the same way. If you are willing to repair your own roof, take deliberate steps to prevent falls. Keep all power tool cords clear of your walking path on the roof, and never try working in rainy conditions.
