A Brief History & Explanation Of Hammers
Hammers are regarded as the oldest tools on earth, and they were probably the equipment with which other tools were initially created. The oldest hammer ever found was most likely used about 2-1/2 million years ago to fashion ancient knives or arrowheads. Happily, in modern times we simply purchase our blades and employ the hammers for nails, chisels and occasionally a wayward thumb. A claw hammer is used mostly for hammering nails into other materials. Occasionally, the claw end will be used to pull out nails that were sloppily inserted by some other guy. The head of the claw hammer is made from fairly brittle steel, consequently claw hammers are not made for metalwork. However, they manage fine on wood, MDF and the other guy’s thumb. Stanley has a properly manufactured 16 oz claw hammer with a fiberglass handle which may look great in your toolbox. The easily seen yellow handle will be easy to find in the tool chest, and the fiberglass material and textured rubber make it easy to hold, while the heat treated head makes it hard on nails.
Ball-peen hammers are set apart from claw hammers since these hammers use a spherical strike surface and never have a claw-end. A ball-peen hammer is used in metalworking procedures for tasks like driving punches and chisels with the needed force to dent metal. Less commonly, it has been used to bend sheet metal if the proper machinery is not available. As a result of the way these kinds of hammers are worked with, they are not very likely to flatten thumbs, although knuckles could turn into collateral damage. Klein Tools, Inc. offers a 12.5 inch ball peen hammer produced with a high-carbon steel head. The straight-grain hickory handle offers more force to the strike and is amply tough for years of use.
A sledgehammer is made with an over sized head, flattened on each end and is naturally somewhat heavier than the aforementioned two kinds of hammers. Sledgehammers are engineered to mete out a larger impact than the smaller hammers and are not really made for aim. These hammers are routinely used for driving spikes and are particularly useful for demolition of numerous materials. Pony makes a 10-pound sledgehammer mounted on a yard-long fiberglass handle which makes certain that the force is concentrated on the object, rather than the person employing that hammer. The steel head is heat treated for resilience, and the strike surfaces as well as the sides are treated to guard against rust.
Hammers are very old and incredibly useful tools. They are made to be used for driving, squashing, penetrating, and now and then for destruction. No respectable tool box should be in public without at least a couple of these handy tools. Incidentally, they are certainly not intended for thumbs, knuckles or other extremities, so make sure that other guy keeps his paws out of the hammer’s sphere of influence.
